Apocalypso is a choreographed, speculative opera set after the collapse of humanity. As hyper-individualistic humanity implodes, hybrid figures – mermaids, zombies and animatronics – rise to the surface in search of new ways of living together.

These figures embody Black queer futures, Black femmedom, fluidity and collective resistance. They navigate issues of care, corporeality, labour and survival beyond neoliberal notions of inclusion. With the sea as a space for memory, history and becoming, they bring together Apocalypso Caribbean mythology, song, choreography and speculative fiction. Through humour, poetry and rebellion, the work explores how communities are formed, sustained and transformed.

The title combines ”apocalypse” – from the Greek word meaning to uncover or reveal – with ”calypso”, the Afro-Caribbean musical tradition known for portraying contemporary political realities through wit, storytelling and seduction. Like its title, it lays bare Apocalypso social injustices, whilst drawing the audience into a vibrant and unruly world.
